A Nevada Highway Patrol officer spent nineteen years on the I-80 corridor. On a midnight shift during a blinding dust storm near mile marker 149, he and his partner watched two featureless figures stand completely motionless in 70mph winds. What were they? Why didn't the dust touch them? Before he could call it in, three black SUVs with armed federal agents appeared out of nowhere and told them to forget everything. Why did they arrive so fast? What did they already know? His partner vanished days later and has never been found.

Then, a lifelong outdoorsman from Elko, Nevada. Half Shoshone, raised with warnings his grandmother never fully explained. He drove out alone into the open range country near the Humboldt Range and something found him before he found anything. How did it know where he was? How did it know his name? He didn't answer. He ran. He has not gone back.
