She was punished for pushing to investigate Epstein. Now she's paying the price | The Moment

From Brad LaPlante: State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou has spent her career working on behalf of people the system failed; first, as a victim’s advocate for domestic abuse survivors in Ingham County, later as a public defender. The East Lansing Democrat traces that path and the work driving her now.

Tsernoglou spoke with 6 News from her Mackinac Island hotel room about criminal justice, the legislation she’s championed, and the political cost of her most prominent fight.

Much of it centers on Jeffrey Epstein. Tsernoglou has pushed for a state investigation into the late convicted sex offender’s ties to Interlochen, the northern Michigan boarding school where court documents allege Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell met a 13-year-old victim in the 1990s. Her resolution to launch an investigative committee drew 44 co-sponsors.

Soon after she publicly pushed Republican House leaders to call a floor vote, she was removed from her committee assignments. She told 6 News previously the timing isn’t a coincidence. She said she attributes the actions from House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, to retaliation. Hall, meanwhile, says it’s her conduct on the Oversight Committee.
