GORGO - Britain's Technicolor Version of Japan's Godzilla!

🦖🌊 Gorgo (1961) - After the success of Japan's 1954 hit Godzilla, the Brits decided they wanted in on the action too.

A giant sea creature gets hauled out of the ocean and dumped into a London circus for profit. Naturally, things don't go so well. Because little Gorgo is not fully grown. Somewhere beneath the sea lurks his mother - a skyscraper-sized reptilian nightmare who stomps across London with the fury of a parent discovering strangers put her child behind glass for paying customers.

The creature effects are fantastic for the period, dripping with that beautiful early-1960s monster texture - thick scales, wet skin, smoke-filled city streets, and a roaring beast tearing through Tower Bridge while British soldiers helplessly fire at it.

Unlike most giant monster films of the era, Gorgo has an oddly emotional core beneath the destruction. The ending is surprisingly tender for a movie featuring military battles, collapsing landmarks, and hordes of British people getting squished under falling rubble.
