Mark Making for Reluctant Writers: Fun Pre-Writing Patterns (Brick Activity)

If your child is reluctant to write, start with fun mark making first. In this quick early years activity, we use a brick as a writing surface and turn it into a simple challenge: make patterns, copy patterns, and talk about what you can see.

This is a brilliant pre-writing idea for preschool, nursery and Reception because it builds the foundations for handwriting without pressure. Try different tools (chalk, paint sticks, felt tips) and different materials to create a sensory, hands-on experience that helps children feel confident making marks before forming letters.

Try it today:
• Choose a “tool” (chalk/paint/marker)
• Make a simple pattern (lines, dots, zigzags, waves)
• Ask: “What can you notice? What can you see?”
• Let your child copy, continue, or design their own
