USS Cyclops was a Proteus-class fleet collier commissioned in 1910, about 19,360 tons fully loaded, designed to carry coal for the US Navy's coal-burning warships. In March 1918, on her way home from Rio de Janeiro to Baltimore with a cargo of dense manganese ore and 306 crew and passengers aboard, she put into Barbados for stores, sailed on March 4, and was never seen again. No distress signal was sent. No wreckage was found. No bodies washed up. Her loss remains the largest non-combat disappearance in US Navy history. The most plausible explanation is that the heavy ore shifted in a storm and capsized her, a fate her sister ships Proteus and Nereus shared in 1941 in similar conditions. Other theories include German submarine action, structural failure, and the Bermuda Triangle. None has ever been confirmed.
