Why I Use Hand-Cut Stencils in Abstract Figurative Art | 14-Hour Shift in the Art Studio

Clocked in at 8:00 AM sharp to push this abstract figurative series forward. Today was strictly about the physical mechanics of the canvas. I’m actively integrating hand-cut stencils into the composition, testing shapes against the surface, and forcing the colors to work.

But you only earn a full day at the easel by clearing the administrative deck first. Once the business logistics and fall semester prep for the academy were handled, I locked back in and painted straight through until 10:00 PM.

Working with stencils forces you to consider the weight and intention of every single mark. That exact intentionality is how you build a professional practice.

The pressure is on to finalize this body of work before my upcoming solo exhibition in Dayton.

I leave for a five-week trip to Italy soon, and I am packing paper and paint to maintain my daily habit on the road and the exact same strategy I used to build the work for my San Angelo exhibition.

Another day, another layer.
