Democratic Whip Katherine Clark took to the House Floor on March 27, 2026, and used Speaker Mike Johnson's own midterm slogan "common sense versus crazy", to expose exactly what House Republicans chose to do: extend the longest government shutdown in American history rather than pass a bipartisan bill that every single Senate Republican had already voted for. Rep. Jim McGovern opened by calling out the most unpopular party in the country, warning that the American people would sue Republicans for malpractice as gas prices, housing costs, and groceries continue to rise. Clark then dismantled the GOP position piece by piece, laying out what was on the line: TSA, FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the Cybersecurity Agency, and made clear that Republicans chose to keep it all shut down so that masked ICE agents could keep kicking down doors without warrants. Johnson coined the phrase.
