Denim Development: Talking tech, sustainability and ethics with Soorty Enterprises
Denim must be one of the (if not the) worlds most mass-produced fabrics. With this, whether us denimheads like to acknowledge this or not, comes a lot of environmental and ethical issues. From the growing of the cotton to the dying of the yarns to the prewashing and destressing of the finished jeans, denim has a massive impact on the environment and the people working in the industry at every level.

In the past, the manufacture of denim and jeans were all rather mysterious. Many had a lot to hide, to be honest, but the times they are a-changing. Ethics, sustainability and environmental consciousness have become buzzwords in many levels of consumer choice from the cars we drive to the food we eat and to the clothing we wear. A more educated consumer is demanding a product that holds itself to a higher standard than once was the case.
This has meant a marked shift in the ways in which brands choose to manufacture and the choices they make in their suppliers at every level of the supply chain. Nowadays the mills, factories and farms which were before (al least) several steps removed from the end consumer and now taking part in a consumer-facing conversation.
Many producers have a great deal to tell, with their narrative being as interesting and exciting as many of the brands we know and love. Spurred on by the shift in consumer demand as well as a myriad of other motivations (not least the desire to do good for their employees and the environment) these pioneering companies have taken leaps forward in recent years in terms of the technology that goes into a pair of jeans.
One such denim producer is Soorty Enterprises. Their Marketing and Communication Manager Eda Dikmen was kind enough to take us through the fascinating innovations that Soorty have been developing to make our favourite blue fabric much more green.
