For seven years, Zawadi raised her son Bahati alone — in a Sh. 6,500 bedsitter in Umoja, juggling daycare, a junior tech job, and an online certificate she studied for at night by the light of a single bulb. Her family never called. Not once.
Then, on her father's sixtieth birthday, an invitation arrived. Bahati had been asking about his grandparents. Zawadi went. She did not know the invitation was a trap. She also did not know — and this is where the story turns — that the trap had a much bigger trap inside it. A trap her family had set for themselves seven years earlier. Without ever realizing.
This is a story about a daughter who was thrown away. And the very expensive lesson a father learns when he confuses his daughter for his property.
