Quickest speed upgrade in minutes - LVC Off - YPC Fast Electric rc Outboards
This is possibly one of the quickest — and perhaps most effective — upgrades you can make in just a few minutes to instantly increase the performance of your RC boat setup. That said, it certainly comes with a few important caveats.
In today’s test we demonstrated the difference between running the ESC with the Low Voltage Cut-Off (LVC) switched ON versus OFF. Contrary to popular belief, switching the LVC off does not actually “create” more power. What it does do is stop the ESC from actively protecting the battery against voltage sag under heavy load.
Under hard acceleration and high amp draw — especially when running larger brass props — the LiPo voltage momentarily drops. With the LVC enabled, the ESC monitors this voltage sag and will begin softening throttle response, reducing timing, pulsing power, or partially limiting output in order to protect the battery from over-discharge.
When the LVC is switched OFF, the ESC simply stops intervening and allows the system to continue delivering full current to the motor despite the voltage sag. The result is often:
• harder acceleration
• slightly higher RPM
• higher amp draw
• and a noticeable increase in top speed
In our own testing, running with the LVC ON produced a top speed of 64 km/h (40 mph), while switching the LVC OFF increased the speed to 69 km/h (43 mph) — an 8% increase in speed along with noticeably more aggressive acceleration.
The trade-off however is increased battery stress, more heat generation, deeper voltage sag, and a greater risk of damaging the LiPo if over-discharged. In high-performance RC racing many experienced racers do run with the LVC disabled for maximum performance, however they carefully monitor runtimes and cell voltage after each run.
As mentioned in the video, if you choose to run with the LVC OFF, you must take responsibility not to run your cells below roughly 3.3v per cell. Personally, I would recommend disabling the LVC for racing situations where maximum performance is desired, but for general bashing and fun runs I would still advise keeping the LVC enabled at around 3.4v per cell for better battery protection and longevity.
