Video Description
~~~~~~
If you have an Android application that allows you to use the phone as a flashlight.
It has absolutely zero reason to need access to the internet.
So in today's video, I want to show you a handy little privacy feature that is built directly into GrapheneOS
It will allow you to block network access for any app that you currently have installed
That way, you are 100% sure it cannot be sending any of your personal data off to a server somewhere.
And for anyone who does not have GrapheneOS as their firmware.
There's actually an ADB shell command that can block an app from accessing the internet as well.
So stay tuned in through this video, and I'll be sure to talk about that toward the end.
Blocking Network Access with GrapheneOS
When you want to block an android application from having access to the internet while you're using the grapheneOS firmware, you first need to find the icon for the application itself.
Then, from here, you're going to want to perform a long-press gesture
And then tap on the little "i" icon. . .so that we can dive into the App Info page for this specific app.
Now, we're going to look in the Permissions section.
And change the Network permission from Allow to Deny
That's all there is to it.
You can see, when that permission is denied, the app no longer has access to the internet.
Conclusion
So, what if you don't have GrapheneOS?
I've read that you can use the ADB Shell command with the netpolicy set-uid-policy parameters, and that can prevent an application from accessing the network.
You will need to figure out the UID for the application, though, and it won't persist through a reboot.
But it is said to work without root access
You can use it on virtually every version of Android, no matter which firmware you're using
And you can even setup apps like Tasker to automate the command so it sticks after a reboot.
But I'll go over all of this in a different video.
