As your hard drive running out of space or showing signs of failure? In this comprehensive guide, we show you how to clone your Windows installation to a new, faster SSD or larger HDD using the free version of Macrium Reflect. Although Macrium has moved to a subscription model, we'll show you where to safely download the legacy free version and how to set it up for a successful clone.
We walk you through the entire process: from preparing your partitions and executing the clone to booting from your new drive for the first time. We also address a common issue where the new drive doesn't show its full capacity after cloning, demonstrating how to use a free partition editor to reclaim unallocated space. Whether you're upgrading your hardware or creating a fail-safe backup, this tutorial has everything you need to know.

2:47 - Preparing Your Source and Destination Disks
3:19 - Configuring the Clone: Selecting Partitions
4:54 - Executing the Clone Process
6:06 - Booting from the New Cloned Drive
7:15 - Reclaiming Unallocated Space with NIUBI Partition Editor
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1 - Download the Legacy Software: Since Macrium now requires a subscription, download the legacy version 8.0 (Free Edition) from a trusted source like Archive.org.
2 - Install Macrium Reflect: Run the installer as an administrator. Choose the "Personal Use" option during setup to skip the registration and payment prompts.
3 - Identify Your Drives: Open Macrium Reflect and use Disk Management to identify your source (Windows) drive and your new destination drive.
4 - Start the Clone: Select your Windows drive and click Clone this disk. Ensure all partitions (including recovery and system reserved) are checked.
5 - Select Destination: Click Select a disk to clone to and choose your new drive. Note: This will erase all existing data on the destination disk.
6 - Execute and Boot: Click Finish to start the cloning process. Once complete, shut down your PC, disconnect the old drive, and boot from the new one.
7 - Fix Unallocated Space: If your new drive is larger than the old one, you may see "unallocated space" in Disk Management. Download a free tool like NIUBI Partition Editor.
8 - Resize the Partition: Use the partition editor to move any blocking partitions to the end of the disk, then right-click your C: drive in Windows Disk Management and select Extend Volume to use the remaining space.
