Between 1985 and 1986, a killer in Los Angeles murdered 14 people and left a single white grape at every scene. Investigators called him the Night Stalker — Richard Ramirez. The grape was found at crime scenes, noted in reports, and filed. Detectives never released it to the public. Ramirez continued killing. He was eventually caught not by police but by a group of ordinary citizens who recognized his face from a newspaper photo and physically subdued him in a parking lot. Police arrived after the public had already made the arrest. The calling card sat in evidence files for over a year. To this day, nobody knows what the grapes meant to him.
