Dad gifted his 14-year old son Enchroma glasses to experience color

Ryan’s parents recognized he was color blind since he was a toddler and he couldn’t discern the different colors of his crayons.

Ryan turned 14 in early June. After he turned 14, his dad, Alfred University Board of Trustee member Mike Carey, decided to surprise Ryan and his wife with a pair of Enchroma glasses on their first day of their summer vacation.

Mike first heard of Enchroma a few years ago through the Alfred University alumni e-newsletter. Don McPherson, the man behind the creation of the Enchroma glasses, is an Alfred University alum.

Ryan has had a host of new revelations after wearing them consistently over the last week, and what a better place to do it than at the Jersey shore over the 4th of July holiday. He notices new things every day, and talks consistently about how food looks more appetizing, how much greener the inland marshes look, and the variety of colors on the beach between clothing, umbrellas, and chairs.
