Shroud of Turin: Two Labs, Two Dates, Zero Resolution

The Shroud of Turin has been dated to the 14th century by carbon testing and to the 1st century by pollen analysis, and both tests were conducted by accredited scientific laboratories whose findings are documented in peer-reviewed publications.

This is not a matter of belief versus science. It is a matter of two separate scientific methodologies producing directly contradictory results from the same object, and neither result having been successfully refuted in the scientific literature.

The 1988 radiocarbon dating was conducted independently by laboratories at Oxford University, the University of Arizona, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. All three returned dates consistent with medieval origin, between 1260 and 1390 AD. In 2005, chemist Raymond Rogers of the Los Alamos National Laboratory published findings in the peer-reviewed journal Thermochimica Acta identifying cotton fibers and evidence of reweaving in the specific corner of the shroud from which the 1988 samples were taken, raising the possibility that the carbon testing dated a medieval repair patch rather than the original linen.

The pollen analysis was conducted by Swiss forensic botanist Max Frei-Sulzer, who identified 58 plant species on the shroud's surface, several of which grow exclusively in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea region and do not grow in medieval France or Italy. Subsequent analysis by Israeli botanist Avinoam Danin of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem confirmed the presence of pollen from species native to the Jerusalem area, published in peer-reviewed botanical journals.

The image itself has not been explained. A 1981 peer-reviewed study by the Shroud of Turin Research Project, whose team included researchers from NASA and Los Alamos, concluded that the image was not produced by any applied substance and that its formation mechanism remained unknown.

Both lines of scientific evidence are real. Both are documented. Neither has been resolved.

What does it mean when science produces two contradictory answers about the same object and cannot explain either one fully?
