Technical Debt vs Software Rot: Key Differences Explained

I think a term that people have heard more in the world of software is technical debt. Do you see software rot as something different from technical debt? I mean, to me, it sort of seems like a different lens to look at a similar problem. It's the same causal process you're pointing to, but you're thinking in terms of different ways to deal with it.

So technical debt, you're thinking, well, if we wanted to sort of keep the system at a similar level of maintenance or ability to add features, etc., we would need to be paying a certain amount of effort to the system. And if we fail to do that We're later on, if we want to do those things, we'll have to do more effort later to compensate for the lack of effort now. And that's the debt.

And so the debt is, you know, not paying things now and as a result having to pay more later. But it's pointing to the idea that there is work to keep something able to be maintained and able to be, you know, changing its context and integrating new tools. But the technical debt is, I guess, framing is missing a bit, that you might not pay these costs now, because if you're going to maintain it, you'd have to pay them later.

But you might decide not to maintain it later. You might decide to just drop it. In which case, it makes sense not to pay those costs now, because why bother if you're just going to drop the whole thing?
