Sewer clean out pipes are the access points to the building sewer--the pipe that is responsible for carrying waste from all other drain lines in a house to the sewer main at the street.

Sewer clean outs have screw caps that allow plumbers like Rob to access the building sewer in order to inspect, fix or even replace it.

Because the building sewer pipe is hidden, homeowners can't tell when it is experiencing problems.

If pipe sections become separated, or sag and possibly even break, they can leak water into ground soil. Tree roots seek out this moisture. Roots can then grow into and fill the pipe, or even crush.

Furthermore, things like flushable wipes, grease and foreign objects can also clog a drain.

When the building sewer is clogged, it can cause a sewage backup in the entire house. This can result in a very expensive insurance claim and remediation!

Plumbers use the sewer clean out pipes to run cameras through the building sewer. They check the pipe often from a clean out near the house, and one out by the street (roadside clean out).

Plumbers like Rob will often check the entire building sewer, out to the lateral in the easement, and even into the sewer main in the street, just to be sure all pieces are intact.

Scoping the sewer through a clean out will typically cost about $200-$600.

This should be carried out every couple of years, or possible more often for rental properties. When buying a new house, you should also have sewer line scoped because it is not typically included in the home inspection.

Some older homes down have clean outs, because they were not mandated by code until the late 1970s. However, new clean outs and even a new building sewer can be added.
