History credits Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay with humankind's first summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, in 1953. And, that may well be the case. But, it might not.

There was an earlier expedition that came very close, and may well have put the first human feet at 8,848 meters (29,029 feet). But, any proof is still trapped somewhere in the icy Himalayan grip, if it even exists at all.

Let's have a look at who might have been the first people to stand on top of the world.
