The Williamsburg Bray School: North America's First School for Black Children (1760-1774)

For over 200 years, historians knew the Bray School existed from documentary evidence, but its physical location remained a mystery. Letters mentioned Francis Street, but Williamsburg had changed dramatically.

Then in September 2020, during excavation for Colonial Williamsburg's expansion, archaeologists found it. The actual building.

Inside: slate pencils used by children learning their letters. Lead bale seals — originally for marking shipped goods — repurposed as teaching tools. Ceramic fragments confirming the building's educational purpose.

Jack Gary, Director of Architectural and Archaeological Collections, documented the discovery in Colonial Williamsburg's 2020 report. These artifacts weren't random. They were physical evidence of 300-400 enslaved children learning to read in this exact spot between 1760 and 1774.

The building became a time capsule, preserving the material culture of an institution designed to create literate, obedient enslaved people. History doesn't just live in archives — sometimes it waits underground.
