The hospital was built between 1905 and 1907 and was a replacement for an earlier hospital built in 1880 in the town of Peterhead. Previously there had also been a small fever hospital built in 1865 in Peterhead. The hospital was originally known as the Burgh Hospital and was renamed in the 1950s as Ugie Hospital. Its purpose was to isolate patients with infectious diseases and being close to the sea was an ideal location.
