Slower in the heat?

Your body will always prioritise temperature regulation over power output in the heat.

As core temperature rises:

🔹Heart rate drifts upwards
🔹Fuel demands increase
🔹Cooling demands rise
🔹Sustainable power output falls
🔹Hard efforts become progressively less repeatable

This is why the same watts can suddenly feel far harder despite unchanged fitness.

At a certain point, performance is no longer limited purely by aerobic capacity. It becomes limited by thermoregulation.

The athletes who perform best in hot conditions are rarely the ones who simply “push through” best. They are usually the athletes managing cooling, hydration, fuelling and pacing most effectively.

Research has shown:
🔹Performance can decline by ~3–6% in hot conditions even in trained cyclists
🔹Heat acclimation can improve plasma volume, lactate threshold and endurance performance
