Coastal Moroccan Road Trip Turns Into CHAOS (Borders Closed and Locked In Morocco)
In this Morocco Travel Vlog, I take you with me on what started out as a beautiful Moroccan Road Trip down Morocco’s Western coast, but turned into a disaster, with news of the new Omicron Coronavirus variant, Morocco closing its borders, and me trying to leave Morocco as soon as possible. My original plan was to start in the town of Essaouira Morocco and head down the coast to Imsouane Morocco and Taghazout Morocco, with the potential for a few small stops in between.
To start off my Morocco Travel Vlog 2021 and Moroccan Road Trip, I took a bus a few hours west of Marrakech to the beautiful town of Essaouira, Morocco. Essaouira is a tranquil town on Morocco’s Western coast, most known for its huge fishing port and tranquil, colorful Medina. To start off my time in Essaouira, I walked along one of the beaches to the main fishing port, which is filled with tons of people packing, loading, and selling all types of fish. The main fishing port in Essaouira, Morocco is a great place to experience the local culture and buy some fresh fish at the local fish market. Next on my Morocco Travel Vlog, I walked over to Essaouira’s famous Medina, which is the old town of Essaouira. The Medina in Essaouira is filled with tons of shops, cafes, restaurants, and markets. It’s another great place to experience the local culture of Essaouira. One thing I loved about the Medina in Essaouira is that compared to other medinas in Morocco, like in Marrakech and Fes, the medina in Essaouira is much more calm and tranquil.
The next stop on my Morocco Travel Vlog and Coastal Moroccan Road Trip was a few hours south of Essaouira to the small town of Imsouane, Morocco. Imsouane, Morocco is a beautiful, charming little town that is a great place to escape some of the bigger crowds in other areas of Morocco. Imsouane Morocco is most known for its incredible surf scene, with two main surf spots in town, The Bay and The Cathedral. Imsouane is also a great place to learn how to surf as The Bay is often home to beginner friendly waves. The town of Imsouane, Morocco is quite small, with no ATM and no major grocery store. However, Imsouane has everything you need to enjoy a few quiet days on the beach! Imsouane, Morocco is a must visit on any Moroccan roadtrip!
During my time in Imsouane, Morocco, news emerged of a new coronavirus variant, called Omicron. Quickly after news of the new Omicron coronavirus variant, Morocco closed its borders, cancelling all flights and ferries in and out of the country for a minimum of 2 weeks. At first I thought that news of Morocco closing its borders due to COVID-19 wasn’t a big deal, and I would continue on my Morocco road trip, but as I thought about it more, I realized I couldn’t take the risk of getting stuck in Morocco for many months. So, I decided to end my Moroccan Road Trip early and try to leave Imsouane, Morocco as soon as possible.
Next on my Morocco Travel Vlog 2021, I hitchhiked out of the town of Imsouane, Morocco, took a bus back to Essaouira, Morocco, and then another bus to Marrakech, Morocco. The next morning I was fortunate enough to get on a flight from Marrakech to Paris, France. The last 24 hours of my Morocco Road Trip was the most chaotic and hectic 24 hours of my life! I hope to go back to Morocco sometime soon after leaving the country on such short notice and continue on with my Moroccan Road Trip. I hope you enjoyed my Morocco Travel Vlog!
