Obesity May Speed Alzheimer’s Changes

New research tracking people for five years suggests obesity can accelerate Alzheimer’s-related changes in the body and brain. In a group of 407 volunteers, several blood biomarkers linked to neurodegeneration and amyloid buildup rose much faster in people with obesity—sometimes up to 95% faster—while brain amyloid also increased more quickly. The striking twist is that blood tests appeared more sensitive than PET scans for capturing obesity’s impact over time, highlighting obesity as a potentially modifiable factor in Alzheimer’s progression.
