PSNI appeal for 'calm heads' amid reports of planned protests in response to Belfast stabbing

The PSNI have said that the victim of the Belfast knife attack had significant injuries to his eyes while his alleged attacker had leave to remain in the UK having travelled to Northern Ireland from Dublin.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson has also appealed for calm ahead of reported protests in Northern Ireland in response to the incident.

He urged anyone attending to ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful.

“I understand that last night’s attempted murder will leave people feeling a range of emotions from fear to anger.

“Our officers have a role to facilitate and accommodate peaceful protest.”

The suspect, a Sudanese man in his 30s who has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the assault, also left the victim with slash wounds to his face and back, the PSNI said.
