Etta James was 23 in 1961. The voice of "At Last." A blues singer climbing out of a foster childhood in Los Angeles. She was using heroin. She was angry at the world.

In 1969 she met Artis Mills. He was a 24-year-old auto mechanic in California. He fell in love with her. He knew about the drugs. He stayed.

They married in 1969.

In 1974 the police raided their home in Los Angeles and found heroin. Both were charged. Etta was facing ten years. She had a small son. Artis stepped forward and told the court the drugs were his.

He was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison.

Etta got clean. She rebuilt her career. She visited him every month for 17 years.

He was released in 1981. They moved to Riverside, California. They never had children of their own.

Artis stayed with her until she died of leukemia on January 20, 2012, at 73.
