Learn Tibetan | Lesson 2 — “Tibet” or “Bö”? Native names & regions | Tibetan Tidbits

Welcome to བོད་སྐད་ཐོག་ཐོག་ – Tibetan Tidbits, our Tibetan language course!

This series is designed as a supplement for Tibetan language learners, an aid for teachers, and an invitation for anyone curious about Tibet, Asian regions, languages, or geography.

📖 In this lesson: We look at what Tibetans call themselves and their land.

Bö (Tibetan: བོད་ bod) is the native name often pronounced “Bö.”

A Tibetan person is Böpa (བོད་པ་ bod pa).

The language is Bö-ke / bod skad (བོད་སྐད་).

We also touch on regional identities: U-Tsang (Central Tibet), Kham, and Amdo, and why the English term “Tibet” is an exonym (non-native name).

🌏 In the following videos, we’ll continue exploring the Tibetan language along with its history and culture.

👤 About me: I am a professional Tibetologist and novice video creator, excited to share my knowledge with a wider audience.

📸 Special thanks to the photo authors: Kevin Jin, Gang Hao, Xuyu Chi, Ilya Chunin, Mark Rasmuson, Randy Bailey, and Raimonds Kļaviņš (Unsplash).
