The government of Australia laid down a set of changes on March 18, 2022, that has unlocked a new pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers who have been living and working in Australia throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

To be precise, the Australian government will permit Subclass 482 visa bearers in the short-term stream to obtain permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) visa. Some foreign nationals who earlier held 457 visas but now hold 482 visas will also be qualified for permanent residency.

The Subclass 482 visa is a Temporary Skill Shortage visa developed to permit employers to sponsor eligible foreign workers to occupy a job role for which a suitable Australian candidate cannot be found.
