A Dead Pope Put On Trial ?

What happens when a pope puts a dead man on trial? In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI made history by exhuming the 9-month-old corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, dressing it in papal robes, and propping it up in court. This shocking event, known as the Cadaver Synod, saw the decomposing body assigned a lawyer while Stephen screamed accusations of perjury and illegal papal election. The corpse was declared guilty, stripped of its vestments, had three blessing fingers severed, and was thrown into the Tiber River. This bizarre trial shocked medieval Europe and ultimately backfired spectacularly on Stephen himself.
