Reflective dialogue with AI - the MRI for Psychiatry?: Seeing the Mind in Process
Reflective dialogue with AI - the MRI for Psychiatry?: Seeing the Mind in Process
I am excited to share my latest white paper: Reflective AI Dialogue as Instrumentation for Psychiatry.
For decades, psychiatry has lacked an equivalent to the MRI, a way to directly observe the unfolding dynamics of the lived mind rather than relying purely on retrospectively summarised symptoms. Furthermore, our standard clinical assessments often suffer from what I call the "Domestication Problem": the act of asking a patient to report on their mental state requires them to perform the very cognitive operation their state has disrupted, essentially altering and flattening the state being measured.
This paper proposes a radical but necessary shift. Reflective AI Dialogue is not a digital therapist, a generic chatbot, or a simple journaling tool. Rather, it functions as an "interactive phenomenological probe".
By engaging patients in an iterative, semiotically responsive dialogue, we can observe the actual architecture of the mind-in-process. This allows us to track crucial clinical markers like recursive thought structures, shifts in emotional salience, and a patient's dynamic capacity to handle challenges, all in real-time.
The technology to do this already exists and is being used by millions, but it lacks the necessary clinical scaffolding. We urgently need to build the conceptual, ethical, and developmental architecture to use this instrument responsibly.
I invite clinical psychiatrists, researchers, and mental health technology policymakers to read the full conceptual framework here: https://reflective-ai-psychiatry-o1wiazg.gamma.site/
