The town of Gissi, Abruzzo.

Gissi is a pretty village of approximately 3000 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. It stands on a panoramic hill at 499 metres and it is situated at 30 minutes’ drive from the Adriatic coast, the beach of Punta Aderci and Vasto.
The village stands on a ridge near the Sinello River, among hills covered with orchards, vineyards and woods.
Gissi is known to be one of the few villages in Italy built on gypsum that are still inhabited.
In facts the name “Gissi” derives from “Gypsum” because of the numerous gypsum quarries that can be found, and which give the village its name.
Its origins are very ancient, and the small historic centre still retains all its splendour of a medieval village, with low houses and narrow streets.
Gissi has a lively community and all kind of services, shops, restaurants, cafes and a hospital.
