Measuring What Counts | Zara Phang | TEDxHELP University

In an era where Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is synonymous with a nation's success, Zara challenges us to rethink what truly matters. Tracing the origins of GDP from its 17th-century roots to its modern-day significance, she reveals the limitations of this economic measure in capturing societal well-being, environmental sustainability, and equality. Drawing inspiration from countries like Bhutan and New Zealand, who have embraced alternative indicators like happiness and living standards, Zara advocates for a shift Beyond GDP. She invites us to envision a world where values like health, community, and sustainability guide national progress, urging us to redefine success by measuring what counts. Zara Phang is WWF-Malaysia’s Sustainable Economy Lead and has been with WWF-Malaysia for 9 years, providing content, research, analysis and insights on relevant issues to effectively communicate and support advocacy work on Sustainable Economy. She is co-Chair of the board for the Climate Action Network South-East Asia and is a lead author on the IPBES Regional Assessment report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for Asia and the Pacific. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
