War and Peace is a famously long book, spanning around 1,400 pages with 559 characters. Written by Leo Tolstoy in the mid-19th century, it began as a short novel about a failed revolutionary in the unsuccessful Decembrist Revolt of 1825.

But as Tolstoy wrote the book, the story kept on expanding… and expanding. What started as a book about one member of a group trying - and failing - to overthrow the autocratic rule of the Tsar, turned into something much bigger.
