The patient with the big heel fissure has returned. This time she is going through a serious health challenge, uterine cancer. After successful surgery 3 months ago, she is half way through chemotherapy. Since chemotherapy lowers immunity, she is protecting herself from COVID-19 by largely staying home. A positive outcome of this is that her feet are looking better since she is not spending as much time on them.
Heel fissures are simply cracked heels. They are usually caused when the skin around the heel becomes callused, dry, flaky and hard. This causes the skin to separate, tear, or crack, leaving deep crater like cracks. These cracks in the heel can also bleed causing severe pain and even infection if left untreated. A daily moisturizing routine of the feet can help minimized and alleviate this condition.
