An ingrown toenail is when the edge of a toenail becomes curled or embedded into the skin along the side of a toe. This is most common in the big toe but can occur on any of the toenails. Ingrown toenails can be caused by trauma, clipping the toenail too short, tight-fitting shoes or they can be hereditary. Symptoms include pain, localized redness and, in severe cases, drainage and infection can develop.
There are a couple of ingrown toenail procedures which can be done depending on the severity and the frequency of occurrence. The most basic type of procedure done in mild cases is called the slant back procedure in which a small triangular wedge of the offending nail portion is removed without the use of any local anesthesia. In the second type of procedure, a partial nail removal is performed under local anesthesia. And finally, in the third type of procedure, permanent removal of the side of the ingrown toenail is performed with use of an acid called phenol after numbing the toe with local anesthesia. In most cases, only the incurvated nail portion is removed and not the entire nail plate.
