Classical Music | Jasmine Kang | TEDxYouth@TCIS
Classical music is slowly fading into the background in the modern world. In a performance linking Chopin's pieces, Jasmine Kang reminds us of music's magical ability to connect people of different cultures and times. Jasmine is an 18-year-old South Korean girl who lived in a small industrial city named Jubail in Saudi Arabia for 4 years. Her numerous passions include sight-reading—the art of reading and performing a piece that she has never seen before—Chopin’s classical études, studying Middle Eastern history, and finding new differences and similarities that coexist like a Venn diagram in all cultures throughout the world. Living in Saudi Arabia opened her eyes to the fact that the country is not 100% like its portrayal and perceptions in the media. So, she wishes to use music, the universal language, to communicate that everything—every place, every ethnic group—actually are similar in ways we’ve never considered. She will be performing a series of piano performances across cultures and time periods to convey that inherent empathy and the human experience connects people from all over the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
