Mayke Rademakers - interview about the new album 'Stagioni' on Yamaha E-cello

February 9th 2018, cellist Mayke Rademakers will release a new album on Challenge Classics. This is not just a new CD: it contains a world premiere, 'Stagioni', a solo piece by Mayke herself
on E-cello!

The electric cello, or E-cello, is a relatively new instrument, developed by Yamaha. After her introduction to the instrument, cellist / composer Mayke Rademakers realized that it was perfect for her improvisations. The enormous spectrum of sounds and timbres, as well as the ability to play multiple tones simultaneously with loop station and effect pedals, gave her a variety of possibilities for composition and improvisation. That is how her new work 'Stagioni' came about.

'Stagioni' is an album that covers all seasons of the year, with a nod to Vivaldi. Musical quotes from his masterpiece have been incorporated into her improvisations, but Vivaldi is not even the most important source of inspiration. Sounds from early polyphony (especially Hildegard von Bingen), Sephardic folk music, African ritual music, minimal music and Afro-American blues all influenced the piece. In this way an adventurous and free flowing album has been madeon which a path in sound is created through the seasons of the year and of life itself.
