Percussion Workshop
Cretan drum (daoulaki -toumpi) - Udu drum -Framedrum- cajon
In the workshop, the technique of each instument is presented, how each instrument functions in the music idiom it comes from and how it can be adapted in other music idioms. At the same time, the participants are given the chance to discover the specific styles of playing each instrument.
Every student is given the opportunity to develop his/her skills as a member of a music group, so as to participate in harmony with the sound of the ensemble. The course focuses on the music act, puts emphasis on the aesthetics/artistry of the music performance and aims at the broadening of musical perception in general. Priority is given to the analysis and essential understanding of different rhythms.
In the framework of the workshop, the art of Konnakol* is taught and the possibility of adapting and applying it on different kinds of music.
From the very beginning, the participants are actively involved in the process of composition, thus developing their criterion and sense of musicality.
Last but not least, the student is offered the unique experience of musically co-existing with exceptional musicians and discussing with them the role of percussions in the function of a music ensemble.
The 'play along' process (playing along pre-recorded music tracks) is an important tool in teaching and practicing basic rhythmical patterns on each instrument in a pleasant and creative way.
*Konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally and originates in the musical tradition of S. India. It is a combination of rhythmical syllables spoken while simultaneously counting the tala (meter) with the hand. It enables the composition, performance and communication of rhythms. It is an attractive form of art for all musicians and singers who are interested in improvising with their voice, developing their understanding of rhythmical complexity and expanding their 'scat' language (=immitation of instrument sound with the voice).
