James Tobin speaks on his book “The Man He Became: How FDR Defied Polio to Win the Presidency.”
Tobin is a professor of journalism at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in history, then spent 20 years as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer.
“The Man He Became” covers the effect polio had on the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Tobin also challenges the notion that FDR tried to hide his paralysis and argues that his struggle to overcome his condition gave him the strength to lead the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. Tobin’s other books include “Ernie Pyle's War: America's Eyewitness to World War II” (1997), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in biography.
