This Tool Makes PRYING UP NAILS Easy! (Nail Puller/Carpentry Demolition Tool/Cat's Paw Tool)
Prying embedded nails out of boards can be nearly impossible without the right tool. The nail puller known as the "Cat's Paw" is one of the most useful carpentry demolition tools ever made. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show what it is and how to use it!
Embedded nails are nails that have been fully driven, so the head of the nail is barely exposed, or sunken beneath the surface of the wood.
The Cat's Paw nail puller is a prying/gouging tool.
To pry up an embedded nail, you drive the sharp points of the cleft at either end of the cat's paw tool into the wood around the nail head.
By driving the tool forward while embedded, the cleft of the cat's paw notches around the shaft of the nail.
Using the hammer to carefully tap back on the longer shaft of the tool, you can lift embedded nails to the surface. At this point, it's often easier to pry the nail the rest of the way with a hammer or pry bar.
NOTE: Cat's paw tools will often damage wood, so don't use them on any vulnerable surface you want to reinstall. They're best used on decks, and framing systems.
