History of UNFORGIVABLE Curses and Why They're Unforgivable - Harry Potter Explained

Hey everyone!

Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory! In this video, we’re going to be discussing the history of the three unforgivable curses. We will be touching on where they came from, what they are, why are they considered to be ‘unforgivable’, and whether or not you are able to cast them non-verbally.

The first thing that you need to know is that the Unforgivable Curses are three of the most powerful and sinister spells known to the wizarding world. They are tools of the Dark Arts and generally only used by the darkest and most sadistic witches and wizards.

What’s interesting about these curses is that while they're awful, and their potential for destruction is high, there are other spells that exist in the wizarding world that have the same potential for damage. Why is Sectumsempra not an unforgivable curse? Perhaps it’s just too obscure? Why isn’t the highly destructive Fiendfyre an unforgivable curse? Perhaps it’s too hard to cast? Why is it okay to completely wipe someones memories with something like Obliviate? Why is it okay to transform someone in to an animal against their will? It seems like there should be legislation that addresses these sorts of spells as well.
