Drake Helped Sell 'Euphoria' to HBO: "They Couldn't Believe He Was Coming On" #Euphoria #Drake

Euphoria is one of HBO's biggest hits. But before it became a cultural phenomenon, the network wasn't sure about it. The show was pushing boundaries. Teen sex. Drug use. Graphic violence. HBO was nervous.

Then Drake stepped in.

Creator Sam Levinson explained on The New York Times Popcast that Drake got hold of the scripts very early. This was when HBO was still on the fence. Drake said, "I want to come on as a producer. I want to come on as an EP."

Levinson said Drake's involvement brought a level of confidence to HBO that he'll forever be grateful for. "I think that they couldn't believe that Drake was coming on."

Drake's role wasn't about rewriting scripts. He wasn't in the writers' room giving notes. His job was promotion and marketing – using his platform to make sure people knew the show existed.

It worked. Euphoria became a phenomenon. Zendaya won Emmys. Sydney Sweeney became a star. And Drake, quietly, was part of making that happen.

The show just aired its final season. The finale dropped May 31. But none of it might have happened if a rapper hadn't made a phone call.
