This tutorial features an 3 link X chain made up of 3 links....strong link then a weak link and then a strong link.
With a 3 link chain one end will be true (correct number) and the other end false. (incorrect number) No matter which end is true a same number in a cell which can "SEE" both ends of the chain can be removed.

A surrogate link is when we can use a strong link in place of a weak link.
