The Troubles: 1983
The Troubles (1968–1999) is a year-by-year documentary series exploring one of the most turbulent and defining periods in modern Irish and British history.
Each episode focuses on a single year of the Troubles, tracing the key events, political developments, violence, community tensions, peace efforts, and human consequences that shaped Northern Ireland from the civil rights marches of 1968 to the fragile aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement.
This series is intended as a clear, respectful, and historically grounded account of the conflict, examining the experiences of ordinary people as well as the wider forces of nationalism, unionism, republicanism, loyalism, British government policy, Irish government involvement, policing, protest, grief, resistance, and the long search for peace.
The aim is not to glorify violence or promote any political side, but to understand the history, the suffering, the choices, and the legacy of the Troubles.
If you are interested in Irish history, Northern Ireland, conflict history, peace processes, political history, or the lived experience of communities during times of division, this series will guide you through the story one year at a time.

Read The Troubles Trilogy
If this documentary series interests you, you may also enjoy The Troubles Trilogy, a powerful historical fiction series set in Northern Ireland during the same years of conflict.
The trilogy follows two Belfast families — one Catholic and one Protestant — as they are drawn into decades of violence, fear, loyalty, grief, and impossible love. Beginning in the late 1960s, the story moves through the civil rights marches, riots, internment, Bloody Sunday, Sunningdale, the prison protests, and the long shadow of the Troubles as ordinary people struggle to keep their homes, children, and hearts from being claimed by hatred.
At the centre of the trilogy is the forbidden bond between Aileen Devlin and Thomas Morrow, a Catholic woman and a Protestant man whose love challenges the inherited divisions around them.
Through their families, their child, and the years that follow, the books explore how history enters kitchens, bedrooms, streets, churches, prisons, and ordinary conversations long before it becomes a headline.
