Elvis Presley - Yesterday/ Hey Jude - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Seventy

The only two Beatles songs which were properly covered by Elvis were “Yesterday” and “Something”, whereas “Hey Jude” and “Get Back” were never intended to be serious covers. In the case of “Hey Jude”, it was probably never intended for release, as Elvis omits both the second and fourth verses, hence it's obscurity on the Elvis Now album despite having been recorded in 1969. Elvis did use the chorus part of the song on stage during 1969, segued with “Yesterday”, essentially creating a Beatles medley.
'Get Back' meanwhile, was only ever intended to be used in a medley with 'Little Sister', and only the chorus was ever used by Elvis. It is also true that an Elvis rendition of 'Lady Madonna' did receive an official release, but this two was only an informal version and this too was never intended for recording much less public release. Of the four only 'Something' had anything like an enduring run in the Elvis set list with 'Yesterday' seemingly dropped after just one Vegas season although evidence from TTWII shows it was still rehearsed.
Returning to “Yesterday” and “Hey Jude”, this was likely included in Elvis’ initial Las Vegas set list to add something of a contemporary feel to the show, probably with the stereotypical Las Vegas audience in mind. Showing Elvis sense of humour and typical self-deprecating attitude, Elvis changes the lyrics in almost every rendition from “I’m not half the man I used to be” to “I’m not half the STUD I used to be”!!
Additionally, Elvis almost always introduced the song by telling the audience “Ladies and gentlemen…my version of….”. As the medley was almost always performed just prior to the band introductions, there was usually some interaction with the audience in the time in between and some examples of this have been included.

Prior to becoming the RCA live master, this rendition would firstly have “Hey Jude” edited out before additional backing vocal overdubs were added. In order to help disguise the edit and to seamlessly fit onto the “On Stage” album, applause was also added at the end of “Yesterday”.
