We Attempted a Winter Hike… Nature Said No | Carding Mill Valley

Today’s Freedom Season adventure was meant to be a winter hike to Lightspout Waterfall via Carding Mill Valley… and for a brief, hopeful moment, we thought we might actually pull it off.

We arrived to a snow-covered valley, soaking in the contrast between white hillsides and the green fields below, dotted with sheep who could no longer blend into the landscape. It was stunning, quiet, and deceptively calm.

Then reality kicked in.

Armed with questionable footwear, limited preparation, and blind optimism, we battled ice, jagged rocks, sheep droppings, running water, and increasingly sketchy conditions — all in the hope of reaching the waterfall.

In the end, common sense (and cold toes) won.

With the weather turning and safety becoming a genuine concern, we tucked our tails and retreated back to the car park, accepting defeat and chalking it up as another very real Freedom Season moment.

Not every adventure goes to plan — and that’s kind of the point.
