Trains at Richmond Station - Metro Trains Melbourne

In this video we visit Richmond, a major interchange station in inner Melbourne that serves as the junction for the Burnely and Caulfield groups of lines. With 10 platforms Richmond is the third largest station in Melbourne and the ninth busiest overall with 4.17 million passengers in 2018-19. Richmond can get very busy during peak hours as passengers as many passengers change between lines, and services heading into the City Loop. Richmond is also close to Melbourne's sporting precinct and can also get very busy during major events.

We see a variety of different Metro trains including Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis EMU's. We also see the Maryvale Paper Train heading towards Melbourne, and some V/Line Sprinter's heading to Traralgon.

Richmond station opened as Swan Street on the 12th December 1859 before being renamed Richmond on 1st January 1867. Richmond station has been rebuilt four times throughout its life as Melbourne's rail network continued to expand. The current station opened on the 26th March 1960 to replace the previous station (which resembled an elevated version of North Melbourne) which had only six platforms. The station has had some upgrades over the years, most recently in 2015 which saw new shelters built on the platforms and ramps, and the station toilets refurbished.
