1942. In the burning, arid expanses of the North African desert campaign during World War II, access to fresh drinking water was more valuable than ammunition. To support the rapid advance of the British Eighth Army, engineering units pulled off a monumental feat: building a hundred-mile-long steel water pipeline directly behind the front lines. Working under blistering heat and frequent enemy air attacks, teams welded heavy metal pipes together at an incredible pace of several miles a day, pumping fresh water directly from coastal stations straight into the dry desert outposts.
