Can You Install a New Roof Over Bad Decking?

A new roof is only as strong as the decking underneath it.

During a recent roof inspection in Glen Rock, NJ, Mattsson Roofing identified multiple areas of blackened roof decking caused by long-term attic ventilation problems. The homeowner ultimately chose another contractor after being told the decking replacement “wasn’t necessary.”

Here’s the problem with that:
When roof decking has been weakened by years of condensation, moisture buildup, and poor airflow, removing the old shingles can further damage the wood underneath. Roofing crews use shingle shovels to tear off existing shingles, which also pulls thousands of nails out of the decking.

If that wood is already deteriorated, the decking can become compromised even further during the tear-off process.
Then the new roofing system gets installed into weakened wood.

That creates several long-term risks:
• Reduced nail holding strength
• Higher chance of shingles lifting during windstorms
• Continued moisture damage if ventilation problems are not corrected
• Premature roof system failure years after installation
