The Desert Tank With a Jungle Tool

During WWII, soldiers constantly reused captured equipment from abandoned vehicles and battlefields. Fuel, weapons, radios, tools, and personal gear were all scavenged whenever supplies ran low or something useful was found.

This German Fallschirmjäger examined a machete recovered from a knocked-out British Crusader tank during the North African campaign. Designed as a heavy cutting tool for thick vegetation, the blade looked completely out of place among the sand, dust, and armored fighting of the desert war.

Moments like this showed how global the conflict had become. Equipment designed for jungles, mountains, oceans, and deserts often ended up thousands of miles from where it was originally intended to be used.
