ABBA ~ Dancing Queen 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

Can you believe it has been forty years since this was released on December 11, 1976? This is ABBA's biggest hit, a beacon that they had arrived in the US after years of providing memorable top 40 hits, they finally had an American #1 with "Dancing Queen". The surprise of the opening piano pulls you right in to that Phil Spectorish wall of sound straight into disco nirvana. In the UK they had racked up nine #1's and feel that the US was their only failure. The only other groups who surpassed them in the UK were The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard. Each member had a singing career before they joined forces as the Festfolk Quartet in 1970. After several such performances, they began submitting music to Eurovision in 1972, but did not get selected until "Waterloo" did the trick and became the official entry for Sweden in 1974. The song was an international hit, peaking at #6 pop in the US. Fast forward to December 11, 1976 when this song debuted at #86 on the Hot 100, now a full forty years ago. It still sounds as fresh as it did then and evokes carefree memories of being 16 again. I loved high school, had friends, family, a car and a job as a bagger for Great Scott! a now defunct supermarket chain in Detroit. The week just before Christmas, a few employees were sneaking a few sips of alcohol and it was a sweet cherry wine called Kijafa. Later in the parking lot, as I was pushing a row of carts into the store, I was woozy and I hit a patch of ice, and fell flat on my ass, legs splayed open one on each side of the cart I was holding on to. I did not let go of the cart handle and as I looked up to my left saw there was a couple putting groceries in the trunk of their car in suspended animation staring at me. The guy stepped over to me and looked in my eyes, smiled and said "He's buzzin'" to his other half. All I could do was laugh, cos I knew how stupid I looked, said "I'm OK". I got myself back up as they started their car, and the radio was in the middle of playing "Dancing Queen". ABBA continued recording and releasing stellar pop albums until they stopped recording together after 1981's "The Visitors". There was no formal announcement as the members all tried their hands at solo careers with varying degress of success in the US. Andersson and Ulvaeus worked with Tim Rice to create the musical "Chess" and the ABBA sound lived on with the hit single "One Night In Bangkok" with Murray Head providing the vocals. Then in the early 90's when disco was experiencing a revival, ABBA's music was rediscovered and was included in the movies "Muriel's Wedding" and "The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert" and there was an explosion of ABBA wannabees including Ace Of Base. Then "Mamma Mia" came along with it's collection of ABBA hits that helped to flesh out the story. The group was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and then in 2015 "Dancing Queen" was inducted into the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall Of Fame. They were truly a group ahead of their time and now their music seems to be loved by anyone with a heart.
